Draft Planning Agreement prioritises community spaces at Blackwattle Bay
A draft planning agreement for the existing Sydney Fish Market site within the Blackwattle Bay Precinct is being exhibited by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure.
The planning agreement represents a significant milestone in the once-in-a-generation redevelopment of Blackwattle Bay, with a focus on delivering public open space for the community as a priority and reinforcing Infrastructure NSW’s (INSW) commitment to ensuring that more than half of the future precinct is open and accessible to the public. The planning agreement commits to delivering a range of public open space and community infrastructure works prior to occupation of the first new building on the existing Sydney Fish Market site. This will include a new park at Bank Street, the publicly accessible waterfront promenade and boardwalk, as well as the new Sydney Fish Market Urban Park.
Designed to ensure the earliest availability of valuable community spaces, the planning agreement commits to additional infrastructure works including a new cycleway on Bank Street and Pyrmont Bridge Road, a new public reserve, public art, cultural and creative space, and intersection upgrades. In total, public open space will account for approximately 32.5% of the precinct.
The commitments in the planning agreement support the transformation of Blackwattle Bay into a vibrant and accessible community hub and sets the standard for future urban renewal projects by prioritising public spaces.
The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure is inviting submissions until 31 January 2025. Visit the Department’s website for information: Major Projects Portal.
