Green light for Bank Street Park

Bank Street Park has reached a major milestone with the State Significant Development Application determined by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure under delegation for the NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces.

The State Significant Development Application and supporting Environmental Impact Statement were on public exhibition between December 2023 and February 2024, and the Response to Submissions was released in April 2024.

All planning documentation, including details of the planning consent are available on the Major Project planning portal.

Long awaited by the local community, the 1.1-hectare waterside park that surrounds the southern pylons of the ANZAC Bridge will be the first public benefit of many to be delivered as part of the Blackwattle Bay precinct redevelopment.

Designed by award winning landscape architects OCULUS with Collins + Turner, Greenaway Architects, and Greenshoot Consulting and underpinned by First Nation’s design principles of healing, revealing and caring for Country, the park features include:

  • A permanent outdoor multi-purpose sports court.

  • Inclusive play space and fitness stations.

  • Water access and storage for dragon boats.

  • New launch jetty for recreational paddle craft.

  • Harbourside promenade and increased accessibility with new footpaths and cycleways.

  • A new café by the water and public amenities.

  • Adaptive reuse of some of the buildings along Bank Street.

The design was guided by extensive community and stakeholder consultation, which identified community priorities and local infrastructure needs, including the desire for a space that can be enjoyed by all.

A formal process to identify an Indigenous name for the park will begin shortly, in consultation with the community and stakeholders.

Details regarding the development consent are available on the Major Projects planning portal.

What’s next for Bank Street Park?

A formal process to officially name the park will commence soon. We will work with the First Nations community to find a meaningful and appropriate name for the park.

Infrastructure NSW will be seeking a qualified contractor to tender for delivery of the park in anticipation of construction commencing next year.
